Just discovered that in the NASB version, the plague of "gnats" is in the KJV is lice. Matthew Henry in his commentary refers to them as lice. Scholars agree that lice is correct; however, that their bite is part of whst makes them so terrible. In Arkansas, we experienced black flies that were along the rivers. Though very small (larger than gnat and smaller than house fly) their bite was most unbearable. Perhaps this is similar to how obnoxious these gnats/lice were.
